Content Writing Tips for Small Businesses and Eco-Brands

Businesses with an eco-friendly product or service are increasing worldwide. And, consumers are taking note of that. According to a report by Business Insider, nearly half of all shoppers are making purchasing decisions based on how sustainable a business is. So, how do you get across your personal message to your customers? You have the ideal eco-friendly product that you’re so passionate about: Yet somehow, you can’t come up with the right words to get across what your business does. It can be challenging to know what to say and how to say. No doubt, getting across the right message to your target audience can be tough.

Here are some content writing tips to help you get started with writing the words to propel your business and your brand:

Know your main goal

Ask yourself what you’d like to achieve from writing a piece of content. Do you want people to become aware of who you are and what you do? Want them to book a call with you? Understanding how the content will help achieve a particular goal will help keep the focus on the topic you’re writing about.

Write sentences with 'you' not 'we'

It can be natural to write content for your website or social media pages as ‘I do this’ and ‘we do that’. That’s because you want to tell people about what you do. But when it comes to writing for your audience, it needs to be about them. Start sentences with ‘you’ instead. Consider the problem your customer has and think about how your product or service can help them overcome it.

For example, instead of saying ‘we create handmade jewellery made with sustainable material’, you could write ‘a personalised and handmade gift for your loved one that’ll help your family be kinder to the environment’.

Write the start last.

Many people get stuck when they start to write because they don’t know how to introduce the topic. But the main thing is to get down the main points you want to say. Write it down, get it out of your system and come back to the s tart later, which will be much easier afterwards.

Highlight the Benefits, Not the Features

Is your product reusable? Is it handmade from single-use bottles?

Yes, these points are important to mention in your marketing, but highlight how these features of your product benefit the customer. That’s what they’ll be interested in. If it’s reusable compared to the single-use product they usually buy, tell them they’ll save money in the long-term, help the environment and have less rubbish to put out each week.

Be Authentic

Whatever product you have, it’s something that’s going consumed in some way. But if your product is made from a material that’s biodegradable, recyclable or organic, then all the better. Surely, it’s going to be better than purchasing a similar product made from material that will end up in landfill. Make sure your writing comes across as genuine, honest and original. Highlight your eco-friendly benefits in ways that help your audience.

Make Your Content Relatable

Take a friendly approach and write in conversational, everyday language your target customer can understand. Think of how you can add a little fact, something humorous or unusual to make your content more human.

Ready to Write?

Creating content for your business is an ongoing process that should reflect your brand. It can be a mix of information, news in your industry, how you make your products and helpful tips related to your products that help them in everyday life. With these content writing tips, you can start to consider what your product is, how it helps people and start to note down ideas.
